Goal:
To expand the participant's thinking to support the idea of treating the disease of addiction vs. specific addictive disorders.Objective:
The counselor will be able to discuss the rational for treating the disease of addiction.The participant will be able to describe 5 specific non-resourceful behaviors or roles some members of dysfunctional families get stuck in prior to treatment.
The participant will be able to describe 3 treatment strategies for dealing with addiction and codependency.
To incorporate principals that validate the impact of family of origin pathological behavior on the addict today.
To focus on specific recovery strategies
C3-Compulsive Gambling - An Overview
3 Hours
Goal:
To define compulsive gambling behaviors, assessment tools, family of origin issues & treatment strategies.Objective:
The student will be able to describe the difference between compulsive gambling and problem gambling behaviors.The student will be able to discuss the South Oaks Gambling Screen.
The student will be able to examine the influence of family traits and behaviors in creating an effective treatment and after care plan.
The student will be able to distinguish between cognitive therapies and a 12 step approach to treatment.
C10/C10a - Sexual Addiction 101
14 Hours / 3 Hours
Goal:
The overall goal is to present the underlying causes of sexually addictive behaviors and discuss treatment strategies for recovery.Objective:
Participants will be able to describe the 3 levels of sexual addiction.Participants will be able to construct an initial treatment plan for the sexual addict.
Participants will be able to discuss 3 treatment strategies.
c10 is a 14 hour course
c10a is a 3 hour shorter version of the same course
C24 / C24a - Drugs and the Brain (Pharmacology)
7 Hours / 2 Hours
Goal:
The goal of this course is to show very specifically with how drugs reach and interact with the brain and other body parts.Objective:
Differentiate between depressants and stimulants.Discuss the destructive power of nicotine, tobacco and smoking.
Demonstrate the physical aspects of addiction and speak directly to the disease concept.
C24 is a 7 hour course
C24a is a 2 hour shorter version of the same course
C25- Alcohol - Answers, Myths, Facts
12 Hours
- Dr. Raymond V. Haring, Ph.D., shares his insights about the dynamics and elements of alcohol and how it affects the human body.
Goal:
The goal of this course is to discuss issues around addiction, alcohol dependence, beliefs and treatment.To offer examples of screening tools, how alcohol effects the immune system and detoxification issues.
Objective:
Discuss the medical complications of barbiturate withdrawal.Describe 2 screening tools used to diagnose alcoholism.
C34- Screening & Assessment for A & D Among Adults in the Criminal Justice System
7 Hours
Goal:
To facilitate the transfer of state-of-the-art screening and assessment tools for the treatment of alcohol and drug abuse in the criminal justice system.Objective:
Participants will be able to discuss and overview of screening tools useful for working with the CJS population. Participants will be able to define specific tools for treatment planning, special assessment needs and legal and ethical issues.
